Learn to Curl

No! While curling is played on ice it is not a sport which ever uses ice skates. We wear clean rubber-soled shoes on the ice. Any shoes that have a grippy, fairly flat, rubber sole will do. Shoes designed for cold weather and slippery surfaces tend to do better.

Frequent curlers will purchase curling shoes which provide better traction on the ice, and have a built in slider.

We do not allow anyone to curl with open-toed shoes or high heels.

Short answer: The best two hours of your month!
Long Answer: An introduction to the sport of curling. We spend a little bit of time covering on-ice safety, then head out onto the ice to learn the fundamentals of the sport: throwing (also known as delivering) the stones, and everyone’s favorite: sweeping!

Along the way we’ll also cover the important pieces like scoring, communication with your team, the bounds of play (for both players and rocks), and what good sporting conduct looks like in curling. With the time that remains we’ll play a shortened curling game with everyone else that is learning to curl alongside you.

As much as possible we ask that you enter accurate email addresses for all planned attendees.

If you’re trying to purchase quickly – or in the case of minors – you can use your existing email address multiple times by adding a ‘+’ sign followed by a word or name between the first part of your email address and the ‘@’ sign. This will let you enter unique email addresses that should all arrive to your existing account.
Example: name@gmail.com would become name+secondname@gmail.com and name+thirdname@gmail.com, etc.

If this is done for non-minor participants we will follow-up with you to determine accurate emails for all participants. This is required so that all participants can complete their own waivers and receive safety and arrival information.

All participants must be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination prior to entering the facility. Our host facility, Solar4America Ice at San Jose has full details, including instructions for setting up a CLEAR Health Pass on their website at https://www.solar4americaiceatsanjose.com/covid/vaccination-policy

As much as possible we ask that you enter accurate email addresses for all planned attendees. For minors we ask that you enter the address of the minor participant’s parent or guardian so that we can send the required waivers to them for completion.

If the parent or guardian is also planning to participate, then you can use your existing email address multiple times by adding a ‘+’ sign followed by a word or name between the first part of your email address and the ‘@’ sign. This will let you enter unique email addresses that should all arrive to your existing account.
Example: name@gmail.com would become name+secondname@gmail.com and name+thirdname@gmail.com, etc.

We ask that all participants complete their own digital waiver prior to stepping onto the ice. To accomplish this we ask for the email addresses of all participants.

We also want to ensure that everyone participating receives clear instructions on what to wear, where to go, and what to expect.

Each participant will receive 4 emails in total:

  • a ticket email as soon as you complete your purchase
  • Your Upcoming Learn to Curl, which will typically arrive anytime in the week prior to the event and explain how to be prepared for the event.
  • The digital waiver from DocuSign, which arrives shortly after Your Upcoming Learn to Curl
  • Next Steps in Curling, which arrives in the week following the event which describes the club, how to join the spare player list, a league, or as a member, and a link to a survey about how we did.

Sneakers, joggers, or running shoes. Any shoes with a grippy, textured rubber sole will usually work well. Shoes like Crocs, or Uggs are not recommended.

For your safety, participants wearing inadequate footwear such as sandals, fashion boots, or heels will not be allowed to participate.

We ask that shoes be reasonably clean – no muddy shoes on the ice, please!

Athletic pants. Anything that you can do a lunge in.

Jeans are discouraged unless they have some stretch to them.

Warm clothes like hats and gloves.
Layers are recommended. You’ll be on ice, so it’s cold. But many people warm up after sweeping a few stones.
