Open Volunteer Roles

SVCC is a volunteer-run organization that depends on the contributions of each member for sustainment, growth, and improvement. There are many roles in our organization that need filling, including those listed below. If you would like to volunteer with the club but don’t see an opportunity here that is best for you, you can always reach out to the the board, and they will find a role for you to contribute.

If you’re interested in this role, please contact the Board of Directors at board@siliconvalleycurling.com.

Club Representative to MoPac

SVCC is part of the Mountain Pacific Curling Association (MoPac, mopacca.org), one of the ten regional curling associations in the US. MoPac runs qualification events (playdowns) for USA Curling national events, such as US Club National Championships and US Mixed National Championships. MoPac also hosts an annual 5 & Under Bonspiel and other regional competitive events. The organization is also an important conduit for in inter-club communication.

SVCC is looking for someone to serve as a Representative to MoPac. Minimally, responsibilities include attending quarterly meetings (approximately 1 hour each) and vote on behalf of SVCC as needed (in consultation with SVCC BoD). The Representative will summarize these meetings for the SVCC Board of Directors and provide any other key news from MoPac between meetings. MoPac has many committees of its own, and the Representative is encouraged to become involved in activities at the regional level that they are interested in.

If you’re interested in this role or have questions, please contact the Board of Directors at board@siliconvalleycurling.com.

Conduct Committee Member

To ensure that everyone feels welcome and safe in our club, promote inclusiveness, and avoid communication issues and unhappiness, SVCC has a Code of Conduct that members are asked to follow (SVCC Code of Conduct). SVCC members are asked to refer violations of the Code of Conduct to the Conduct Committee. Made up of three members (chair Lise Strom; BoD representative Kevin Jorgensen), the Conduct Committee is empowered to take appropriate action in response to reports submitted.

SVCC seeks a member to join the Conduct Committee. Reports to the Conduct Committee are rare, but the Committee’s work is critical to maintaining the club culture that we have come to expect. When a report is made, the Conduct Committee gathers information about the situation and determines any consequences. Especially strong actions (e.g., suspension or expulsion from the club) are made in consultation with the SVCC Board of Directors. Experience with conflict resolution is beneficial, but not required.

If you’re interested in this role or have questions, please contact the Board of Directors at board@siliconvalleycurling.com.

Systems Administrator (Tech Committee)

The Tech Committee is looking for one additional Systems Administrator to back up David Steele and Andy Carle on IT operations. Most of SVCC’s IT infrastructure (e.g. WPEngine, Slack, MailChimp) is turnkey, commercially supported SaaS that can be maintained by most tech-savvy individuals. But there are a few things that are still managed the old-fashioned way or that have security complexity that should not be handled by inexperienced end users. That’s where help is needed.

Ideal volunteers would have experience and a high degree of comfort managing at least some of the following:

  • DNS records
  • Email resource records (e.g., SPF, DKIM, DMARC)
  • Google Workspace (or similar; what’s important is some experience managing account provisioning to systems that hold sensitive personal information)
  • WordPress (largely automated for SVCC, but occasional human intervention is required for major upgrades like new PHP versions and potentially for disaster recovery)

If you’re interested in this role, please contact the Tech Committee at web@siliconvalleycurling.com

Diversity Committee Member

Established by the Board in order to allow our club to better represent the diversity of our local community, the Diversity Committee (chair Jennifer Asis) is responsible for identifying gaps in diversity and inclusion within our club and narrowing those gaps through methods including, but not limited, to the following:

  2. Reviewing and updating/creating marketing materials to promote and represent a more diverse curling community.
  3. Advocating to our regional and national associations to create opportunities to increase diversity in curling.
  4. Investigating external resources for addressing diversity and inclusion.

The Board is looking for individuals to serve on the Diversity Committee that are:

  • Willing to directly participate in planning and implementing objectives in order to achieve the goal of increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the club
  • Able to work independently and on a team
  • Able to communicate verbally and in written form the goals and progress of the committee to internal and external parties
  • Prior experience with Human Resources, participating in diversity and inclusion-related programs, and/or outreach serving under-represented communities is a plus, but not required

If would like to actively promote positive change in our club, please let us know!

Social Committee Member

If you’re interested in helping plan some of SVCC’s upcoming social events, consider joining the Social Committee. Members of this committee come up with ideas for off-ice (and on!) social activities to help bring our curling community together. This committee organizes events like the Volunteer Appreciation Party, Lawn Bowling, Bye-Week Gift Cards, Virtual Events, and your next great idea!

If you’re interested in this role, please contact the Board of Directors at board@siliconvalleycurling.com to be connected with the Social Committee chair (Mary Riordan), or join the social channel on Slack (#social).
